Rhetorical Deivce

Oxymoron

A oxymoron is when you place two words that contradict each other in the same sentence. an example of an oxymoron can be smart teachers. Nah I'm kidding a real example can be : She was pretty ugly or there's a sale on the mega shrimp.

Many people use oxymoron to portray there confused feelings and emotions. Some people use it on a daily basis. You would think that if you put two words that contradict each other in a sentence during a story the sentence wouldn't make any sense. Yet its the complete opposite. There is no better way to portray confused emotions and feelings. Many great writers have used oxymoron for there story's. Lets look at the great work by William Shakespeare . The story Romeo & Juliet. It is one of the greatest love stories with a tragic ending. Lets examine it for a bit. In Act 1 Scene 1 Romeo says " O Heavy lightness,". The book begins of with Romeo sad because him and Rosaline just broke up. He is confused about his feelings in regret and sorrow about how Roseline broke his heart. He is confused about his emotions and feelings and says "heavy lightness".  He is saying that the pain of his love is heavy yet in an ironic way it is isn't. The importance of this is that it shows that romeo is still confused about his feelings and he cant tell what his feelings are clearly.

Gender Stereotypes

Many things stand out about Romeo & Juliet. One of the things you could focus on is the way the women are portrayed. There are many gender based stereotypes in Romeo & Juliet and most of them are against women. Let`s get into more depth now shall we. Act 1 Scene 1 (in the book) when Sampson says " draw, if you be men" to Abram. Sampson is trying to say that if you are a man come at me. In the Shakespearean days men were the stronger gender while the women were the weaker ones. Sampson is trying to say if you don't fight me you are weak like a women. He is portraying a stereotype saying that women or weak and cant do anything. Yet on the flip side women are shown that they can be stronger then men to. Also in Act 1 Scene 1 Lord Capulet and Lord Montague appear at the scence where Sampson and Abram are fighting. They were both about to step in and join the fight, but there wives stepped in and stopped them from fighting. This shows that the women in Romeo & Juliet have some power. Many people think that women have no power in Romeo & Juliet but the women do have power. The power they have is small and goes unnoticed quite often. So yes there is gender stereotypes against women in Romeo & Juliet but some things make it even.

Star Crossed Lovers

The main role of love in a movie now a days starts of as a 3 part plan. Step 1 boy loves girl. girl doesn't love back. Step 2 the girl agrees but parents don't like. Step 3 The couple goes through many challenges but in the end they get together. Lets take the notebook for example. The main character Noah falls in love with Allison, but she doesn't love him back. After a while Allison starts to fall in love with Noah. Yet Allison's parents don't agree with them. Allison and Noah go through a great number of troubles to get back with each other but they do. This shows the path of love in movies can be put into a simple 3 steps, and that no matter what if you want your love to succeed you have to go through the hurdles  that life throws at you..

Above i have add a picture of the 2 lovers from the notebook
